Day 200! Of Mouse and Mushrooms

The first 100 days of Coronatimes felt like they went by a lot more slowly than the second 100. It's already day 200! That is just wild. It's also the first day of October, my favorite month of the year.

No matter how the days are counted, work had to be done. I spent much of the day on the computer working while Jeremy herded the kids through their lessons. We had a Zoom call to check in with the school in the afternoon, and while we were sitting on the call, Jeremy got up for a second. When he came back, he had a mouse in a jar. He kept it off-camera and I had to keep my reaction (surprise, laughter) in check while we talked about math programs and chromebooks.

After we got off the call, we released the fish back into the wild so we could use their tank as a mouse habitat. And this is one adorable mouse. William, lover of all things mouse-related, was absolutely thrilled. Taiya was excited too. She got shells for the mouse to use as water and food dishes, we put the fish castle in the tank, and have fed it birdseed and carrots. It sat in its little birdseed-filled shell and ate and ate, and then it fell asleep right there too. We looked in our North American Mammals book to try to identify it, and I think it's one of 57 subspecies of deer mouse. Her name is Princess.

Our shiitake logs have started fruiting. Jeremy picked two mushrooms today and said many more were just starting to come out. I also found some volunteer mustard greens when I was picking cucumbers, so for dinner I roasted cauliflower and tofu, cooked rice, and sautéed the greens and mushrooms with soy sauce, sesame oil, and a dash of Chinese Five Spice powder. I can't wait until the rest of the shiitakes are ready!
