Day Forty-Four: What I Miss, A Poem

I have decided continue to post daily, but it may not be just keeping up with the daily goings-on around here. I'll probably still have to share whatever recipes I discover, and funny things my kids do. And if I feel like it, I'll write a journal-style post. But it has become difficult to keep up with the daily journal, so I am going to take the self-imposed pressure off, and open things up a little.

If I share poems here, I would like to note that they are first drafts. I always write rough drafts and then revise heavily, sometimes over the course of years. So when I share things here as part of my daily journal, they will be unrevised, rough, stream-of-consciousness type poems. I normally don't share them when they're at this stage, but normal isn't the name of the game these days. So here's what I wrote today:

What I Miss

A male and female cardinal perch companionably under the bird feeder.
They don't have to stay six feet apart, and I envy their casual closeness.
I want to perch beside a friend and have afternoon tea
and chat about the birds and the weather and the books we've read,
and hug goodbye when it's time to go. I want to be back at the blues festival
sweating in the hot fall evening shoulder to shoulder
with beautiful humans all gathered to be washed over
by the earthy, growling songs coming from the stage.
I want it to be early morning on a summer day and I want to stroll
with my family at the farmers' market and fill my basket
with green beans, tomatoes, patty pan squash, onions, zinnias,
and a bag of gingersnap cookies from my favorite baker.
I have children I can snuggle, and a husband who can envelope me
in his long arms so strong he squeezes the breath out of me,
so I do not miss human touch entirely. Some days, in fact, I wish for less of it.
But I miss the casual friendliness of strangers. I miss eating blueberries
straight from the bag after buying them from the farmer who picked them.
I miss feeling buoyed by the living swirl of a community of people all going
about their days.

We all did chores together on this sunny afternoon. The kids "rode" on an old tractor, we played with puppies that are getting big, rounded up the goats, spotted some butterflies and bluebirds. I walked home while Jeremy and the kids drove home, for some exercise. I found lots of wildflowers and blooming blackberries along the way. We had mashed potatoes again, since Taiya didn't get her fill last night, with eggs, crunchy purple cabbage, and avocado on the side.

Taiya the Unicorn with Skye and Dozer.

Taking her for a spin.

A Pearl Crescent butterfly on blackberry blossoms.

Like a dandelion, but different. Need to look this up.
