Day Thirty-Three: Afternoon of Waiting
Time is a funny thing. The morning floated by with minimal effort. Breakfast was cereal, lunch was a pot of pinto beans I'd slow cooked the night before and quesadillas. I let the kids binge-watch PBS shows. That probably had a lot to do with the feeling of the morning floating by. Minimal battles to quash, minimal entertainment required on my part. Is that what it's like to be seeing this thing through without kids? Time just floating by every day? Wow. What a thought.
The afternoon was spent intensely waiting. Time did not float, it dragged. William has been waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for his Easter present from Gammie, and we knew from the tracking info that it was arriving today. It did not get here until late afternoon though, so William was forced to wait ALL DAY and he was as good a sport as could be expected, but it was tough. When it finally arrived, he was positively giddy. We busted into the box and got his new remote control car loaded with batteries, then he and Taiya figured out all the flips and tricks it can do. It's fast, crazy, fun, and they played tag with it around the kitchen until dinner.
During the Afternoon of Waiting, I got motivated and made a sourdough pizza dough with a recipe from the King Arthur Flour website. I have been enjoying keeping my starter active and well-fed. Since it is so much like keeping a pet, I decided to name it. She is called "My Doughling Clementine." I gifted a jar of starter to my friend Queen Pee, and she named hers "Lil Kumquat," as it is the daughter of Clementine. I know, I know, I'm more excited about this than I should be, but it's Day Thirty-Three and we've got to get excited about something.
Jeremy spent the day dealing with the excruciating details of grant proposal submission and management. I have done plenty of that myself, and so I know it can be a major headache. He had to take a few walks to shake off the tension throughout the process.
Taiya spent much of the Afternoon of Waiting on the phone chatting with a friend of hers. I only heard a part of the conversation, but the part I heard included her friend reading her a Berenstein Bears book over the phone, and if that isn't the sweetest thing you've ever heard, I just don't know what to say.
I got the pizza dough ready before dinner, and William and Taiya helped me put the toppings on. I used jarred sauce, roasted garlic, and grated cheddar cheese. I know mozzarella is proper, but cheddar is lactose-free. I got the crusts nice and thin, and the kids said the pizza was just like restaurant pizza! This is a complement in my book. They'd been asking for restaurant pizza, so I'm glad I was able to approximate it. I also picked a bit of kale and had a raw kale salad on the side. With a bowl of beans, it made for a pretty delicious meal.
At story time, Marilla decided she had better keep Anne after all, and William and I read Only the Cat Saw and Otis and the Puppy. A wild Friday night!
