Day Forty-Seven: Chats and Potholders

I had two lovely chats today. The first was with a friend who lives nearby, but who I haven't seen since... I don't know when! I think the last time we ran into each other was at the elementary school during Dr. Seuss Week. We both had come in to be guest readers, and our paths crossed long enough for a hug and a promise to get together soon. Instead of getting together, we had to settle for a phone call. I lay in the hammock and we talked about books and herbs and the universe and everything. It was a sweet, meandering conversation, and such a treat. The first time I hung out with this friend while our daughters played together, we drank tea and talked for four hours non-stop. As Anne of Green Gables would have said, we became bosom friends immediately. So it was nice to catch up with her and see how she is faring with all this pandemic business. While we talked, Jeremy was working on building some wooden stand he needed to sharpen his cross-cut saw (like you do), William was playing with the hose again, and Taiya was inside designing and building an elaborate fairy house.

The second phone call I had was with my mother-in-law, who also lives nearby, and who I haven't seen since the weekend before we started sheltering at home. She has had two bouts of pneumonia this winter and therefore has made my worry-list, but she is doing fine. We chatted about the kids, Mother's Day, house cleaning, school, food, roses, and I don't know what else. I loved getting to just chit-chat. Taiya has observed to me in the past, in an exasperated tone, that grown-ups love to chit-chat. She gets this bored look on her face whenever I get to talking with a neighbor or family member, tuning out our yakety yaking. Taiya chatted with her Gammie for a few minutes, but lost interest after a bit, wandering away to work on her latest project, potholder weaving. Thank goodness I got her a potholder loom for Christmas this year! Pandemic or no, we will never run out of potholders! That's a relief.
