Day Sixty-One: Butt Bread
Today I attempted another sourdough bread recipe. I have been reviving my doughling Clementine with regular feedings for a few days, and she's nice and bubbly again after her sojourn to colder climates. We and all the grocery stores around here are out of whole wheat flour, so I only had white flour to work with. I found a recipe on King Arthur Flour's website for rustic sourdough and gave it a try. I mean, it's rustic, how hard can it be? And indeed, it was easy to mix up and didn't require an overnight wait, so it looked like a winner.
However, you can see by the results that things didn't go according to plan. I think I let it rise too long on the first rise. Then, I think I didn't form the loaves properly. So when they rose, they rose sideways, not up. The kids and I were cracking up about the butt bread as I put it in the oven. Jeremy got home mid-bake, and I told him to look in the oven, and he said, "There's a giant butt in there!" I mean, it's too funny. The rest of the day was spent making butt bread jokes. Luckily it tasted just fine, and we ate through one cheek before the night was over.
