Day 188: Yoga, Friends, and a Lost Tooth
My coworker Robyn (also known as Darcy's mom) and I had a creek playdate today. Darcy and Taiya became friends over several holidays when school was out and Robyn and I brought our kids to the office in lieu of paying for babysitters. They hit it off immediately and are now besties. Robyn and Darcy came down in the early afternoon today, and after a brief tour of my bedraggled garden (Robyn and I always talk gardening and share plants), we went down to the creek.
William was excited to be a part of this big event too - he sort of hangs out on the periphery of the big girls' play until he gets bored. Then he hangs out with me. I think Taiya and Darcy would include him more if they noticed him, but they just love each other so much they kind of forget about little William. Ah, the plight of the youngest sibling!
Robyn and I set ourselves down on yoga mats by Ol' Curvo and the girls and William played in the water for a while. It was so nice to bask in the sun on the rocks and stretch, chat, snuggle with a wet Daisy, and help the kids with various needs (opening snacks, handing them toys, etc.). Jeremy came down and joined us for a while. Taiya and Darcy set up a picnic spot about 30 yards away from us adults and played there out of earshot, talking about who knows what. William decided he wanted to go back to the house with Jeremy, so for the rest of the afternoon it was just us ladies. Taiya and Darcy made a couple trips back to the house for more supplies, and Robyn and I just channeled our inner lizard and basked on the rocks and talked. The sound of the creek, the quiet, the ability to have a conversation without being interrupted. It was so, deeply pleasant. Taiya and Darcy had a blast too - they have been so starved for time with other kids, it was so great to see them so happy together.
I realized I almost never let myself just sit around for long periods of time like that. I'm always doing something, whether it is playing with the kids, working, cleaning, gardening, or cooking. It was some good medicine, just doing nothing. I ought to do it more often.
