Day 135: Donut Shop
The Donut Shop
She draws all the details of the shop.
There are magnets on the fridge holding notes.
Reminders, maybe, to order more flour.
She draws a donut who serves donuts
at the counter in a jaunty hat and sprinkles.
She puts smiles on everything.
The donut smiles, waiting
for your order. The pastry bag
of the donut chef smiles waiting to be squeezed.
It is certain that the chef is smiling over her work
but her back is to us so you can't see.
And off the page my daughter smiles as she draws
and as she watches me take in the details
she created in her tiny drawing.
My smile is heart-deep as she goes back to her desk
to draw a tiny smiling artist
with a smiling palette and a smiling painting
with a smiling sun on the easel.
