Day 162: First Day of School!

Pre-pandemic I woke up at 5:45 every morning. By Day 161 I had long since turned off that alarm and taken to sleeping in until around seven - downright decadent. But now on Day 162, with school starting, I have to return to my full 40 hours of work, so I set my alarm for 6 and got up in the dark to make coffee and spend time at my standing desk before the kids woke up.

The day went... fine. Nothing all that different from the summer, since their work was minimal on the first day of class. No live Zoom classes for them to struggle through, just a few fun activities and they were done. I read some Anne of the Island to Taiya in the middle of the day, which was a nice interlude, and felt like a good school-from-home thing to do. Jeremy spent a lot of time with them too so I could work, and I actually got a lot done. It felt amazing to be able to work for extended periods of time without being interrupted. I didn't realize how much I missed that feeling of diving into projects and checking things off the to-do list.

Here was the only "first day of school" picture I could convince the kids to do. They were not at all sentimental about picking out special outfits or posing at our usual spot. So, I just went with it. It's a weird year, no point in pretending otherwise. Might was well get comfortable with it.
