Tuesday (142) involved some hilarious texting between me and my friend Laura who bought a dishwasher and was trying to figure out if she could take her cabinets apart by herself to install it, or if she should really wait a month for the handyman. Questions arose like, "Why are kick boards a thing?" and "Is this load-bearing?" In the end she had to wait, since all the electrical and plumbing will have to be added. But she was *this* close to tearing into it with her saw. Home improvements during coronatimes.
Wednesday (143) I did a bizarre culinary experiment that might interest vegans/vegetarians. Someone in a cooking-related Facebook group I'm in shared a recipe for grilled watermelon. So I tried it, and... well, I preferred the bratwurst we grilled alongside it, but it wasn't bad! Especially with chimichurri on top. Plain, it kind of tasted like grilled squash, oddly enough. It did absorb that delicious grilled flavor, so I can see how it would satisfy the craving for grilled foods that summertime seems to bring on. Add some chevre and a topping like chimichurri or pesto, and you won't even miss the bratwurst (much).
Thursday (144) saw the start of a small, satisfying project that has been put on hold for, oh, ten years or so. Here is the before picture:
Friday (145) saw the completion of this project. Well, near completion. We still have to actually nail the boards in place, and then decide how to finish it. Paint? Stain? Just leave it be? Any ideas? Feel free to send them my way.
I am so glad to have this all done. I never have to stare into the dusty gaping spaces beneath the stairs, never have to fish out dropped stuffed animals from the spidery domain. Now guests will have privacy when showering in the below-the-stairs shower. What an improvement! Jeremy could probably have lived his whole life quite happily without worrying about finishing this project, but it had been bugging me for years, so I spent some birthday money on lumber and Jeremy spent a half a day cutting the pieces to size. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
This week was a mix of really good rainy days, a little taste of coolness in the mornings that make the mind turn eagerly to fall, and enough heat and humidity to make the pool still feel really good. I know we're not done with summer yet, but I have been glad for a little relief from the oppressive temperatures.
